Communications Director

 

The Homeless Narrative and Action Campaign is reshaping the public debate and narrative around homelessness by using cutting edge research, communications and grassroots action.

HNAC seeks a Communications Director for its rapid response war room in Washington, DC. Due to COVID-19, all employees will work remotely until we can safely return to office together.

As a key member of the senior leadership team and reporting to the Campaign Director, the Communications Director will lead campaigns and communications work to increase our impact and capacity to drive a public narrative change. She/he/they will bring an inclusive management style that supports staff members to achieve their highest potential and is grounded in principles of equity and inclusion.

Duties and Job Responsibilities Include:

 

·       Manage the day-to-day operation of a three-person communications rapid response war room team to implement the project's strategic goals, oversee and participate in press work, social media production, campaigns and partner outreach.

 

·       Develop communications plans and budgets.

 

·       Support and lead communication strategies that generate political, opinion-leader, activist and broad public support for the goals of the campaign.

 

·       Work in collaboration with outside consultants, coalition partners and allies to develop and implement communication plans to advance the new Homeless Narrative and coordinate the communication war room's accountability work.

 

·       Maintain strong relationship with reporters, regularly pitch stories.  Serve as a spokesperson speaking on the record to print, broadcast and social media outlets.

 

·       Scope, draft, edit and distribute-press releases, message guidance, policy explainers, op-eds, letters to the editor, detailed issue reports, video scripts, graphics and other communications materials for our partners and the public.

 

·       Plan and execute media events, including press conferences and tele-conferences.

 

·       Oversee the gathering of public opinion research, policy reports and develop extensive analysis of data from a variety of sources to identify evidence, develop talking points and inform overall communication strategy in support of the new Homeless Narrative.

 

·       Develop and perform training and technical assistance with partner organizations in the implementation of the new narrative, war room and accountability activities.

 

·       Build and support a consistent project brand, including developing project naming—based on our research, development and launch of a website, collateral materials and messaging guides.

 

·       Serve as a member of project management, work to set and drive strategic direction, address organizational challenges and manage relationship with partners.

          

            Ideal Candidates Will Have:

·       Bachelor's degree, preferably in an appropriate discipline (English, journalism, public policy or political science).

·       At least 5-7 years of relevant experience applying media relations, paid communications, and/or digital media expertise in political campaigns, government, public policy, journalism or advocacy nonprofits.

·       Successful candidates will be experienced in advocacy for policy change and especially in the role of strategic communications in electoral or advocacy campaigns.

·       Experience designing and implementing integrated communications strategies, including elements of paid and earned media, across a range of platforms, including traditional and digital media.

·       Experience working in a fast-paced environment, such as a member of Congress, candidate or ballot measure campaign or advocacy campaign at the federal or state level.

·       Direct media relationships across print, electronic and social media- nationally and in key regions/states.

·       Experience developing and executing state of the art communications and/or advocacy campaigns utilizing public opinion research in both traditional and digital communications strategies.

·       Superior analytical, writing, editing, verbal communication and management skills.

·       Proven ability to manage, lead and mentor, with the ability to earn the trust of a diverse team.

·       Experience working with and on behalf of low income and diverse communities.

·       Experience building advocacy communications capacity of staff and local partners.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $100k-120k plus benefits and will be determined based on experience and qualifications for the position.
