Legislative Director
Incoming New York State Senator Sean Ryan seeks candidates for the position of Legislative Director to manage and advise the Senator on all legislative policy, positions, and strategy. This position will be based in Albany and will be full-time during Legislative Session, and part-time out of Legislative Session. Previous legislative experience is required. Candidates should have a thorough understanding of the legislative process and an ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. This position reports to the Senator and Chief of Staff and will work closely with the Communications Director and Policy Director.
Responsibilities
· Manage and advise the member on all legislative policy, positions, and strategy.
· Execute long-term and short-term strategic planning for the member's legislative agenda
· Handles a portfolio of legislative issues, including the member's committee assignments
· Monitors legislative activity on the Senate floor and the members committees
· Develops coalition-based, strategic approaches to advancing the Member's agenda
· Assists constituents, advocacy organizations, and district staff to provide relevant updates on legislation.
· Takes constituent and advocacy group meetings
· Coordinates the preparation of legislative memos, policy-related interview prep, and cosponsorships.
· Maintains records of votes, policy positions, legislative initiatives, and cosponsorships
· Perform other duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities
· Ability to think strategically to advance legislative agenda and priorities of the Senator.
· Thorough knowledge of the legislative process
· Excellent writing and editing skills
· Ability to self-motivate, think creatively, and problem solve
· Works well under pressure, stress, tight deadlines and long hours
· Strong multi-tasking capacity
· Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others.
Qualifications
· 2+ years prior legislative experience
· Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Public Policy or related field
Salary Range: $60,000 – $70,000, commensurate with experience.
