Communications Director
Incoming New York State Senator Sean Ryan seeks candidates for the position of Communications Director to manage and advise the Senator on communications policy and strategy. This position will be based in Buffalo and will be full-time. Previous communications experience is required. Candidates should have a strong understanding of the media landscape and ability to think creatively about press opportunities, and an ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. This position reports to the Senator and Chief of Staff and will work closely with the Legislative Director and Policy Director. Western New York ties are a plus.
Responsibilities
· Development and daily execution of the office's communications strategy across traditional and new media platforms
· Cultivating and maintaining relationships with state and local reporters.
· Acting as a liaison and on-the-record contact with state and national media
· Preparing the member for speaking appearances
· Oversight of writing op-eds, talking points, press releases, newsletters, mailings, and speeches
· Direct supervisor of Press Secretary and Digital Media Manager
· Perform other duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities
· Ability to think strategically to advance priorities of the Senator.
· Thorough knowledge of communications strategy as well as legislative and non-legislative issues
· Ability to evaluate current events
· Excellent writing and editing skills
· Ability to self-motivate, think creatively, and problem solve
· Works well under pressure, stress, tight deadlines and long hours
· Strong multi-tasking capacity
· Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others.
Qualifications
· 2+ years prior communications experience
· Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Communications, Public Policy or related field
Salary Range: $55,000 – $65,000, commensurate with experience.
