The Voting Rights Lab is looking for an Associate Director of State Communications to lead our communications work on our state campaigns.  This role will be part of the Communications team, reporting to the Communications Director, and will work in collaboration with other parts of the organization as well as external partners. Core responsibilities will include developing communications plans within our state campaign plans, drafting press materials, as well as building and maintaining press lists and pitching stories to reporters. For this role, we are looking for someone with 3-6 years of relevant experience. The person in this role must have a proven track record as an excellent writer.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Work with Regional Directors to develop and drive communications plans that include creative tactics to help state-level campaigns break through in a crowded media environment
  • Draft press releases, letters to the editor, op-eds, talking points and other materials for media outreach
  • Provide communications support to in-state campaign partners in traditional and digital mobilization including collateral creation, sharing press lists, trainings, and other support. Work with partners and other stakeholders to help them execute communications plans and generate media coverage
  • Build and maintain relationships with state-level media contacts; pitch stories as well as provide background information for reporters
  • Monitor state news as it relates to voting rights issues; maintain systems for collecting, organizing and sharing press clips
  • Package and uplift stories of people who are affected by attacks on voting rights, with an emphasis on building and maintaining relationships with diverse storytellers
  • Empower and connect storytellers from communities with media opportunities 
  • Provide support in building press events by drafting materials, issuing advisories, and working to secure press attendance
What we're looking for in you:
  • 3-6 years of relevant experience including a minimum of 2 years in direct communications work with a proven track record of executing high quality work in a fast-paced campaign environment (issue advocacy or political campaigns are fine)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience communicating complex policy ideas in a way that helps audiences understand and relate to them
  • A high degree of comfort with long and short-form writing 
  • A snappy content creator who is comfortable working in a fast-paced, campaign environment
  • Organized, resourceful, flexible individual with strong time management skills and an ability to work independently and on tight deadlines
  • An ability to draft press outreach materials in different tones for use across multiple audiences, as well as different states and political contexts
  • Experience working with diverse communities and committed to acting on the belief that racial equity and social justice are critical components of our work
  • Speech writing experience, familiarity with media databases, Spanish language proficiency, and issue-advocacy experience are desired but not required

Compensation & Benefits:

The salary range for Associate Director of State Communications will be $78,000 - $101,000.
