Position Description
Wallace Global Fund is a philanthropic leader supporting progressive social movements and collaborative campaigns to confront corporate capture and corruption of democracy, to demand accountability for environmental harms and human rights abuses, and to elevate community- and nature-based solutions and benefits. WGF supports non-profit organizations and social movements seeking systemic solutions in four program areas: democracy, environment, corporate accountability, and women's rights. These programs are fundamentally aligned and interconnected. At Wallace Global Fund (WGF), we support people-powered movements to advance democracy and rights and to fight for a healthy planet.
The Fund seeks a part-time Communications Fellow to provide crucial support to the Senior Officer, Communications and Strategic Engagement. This position will play an important role in helping WGF expand its media, social media, email, and multimedia presence online, as well as continue implementing new and innovative processes for our newly established communications function.
Organizational Background:
Established in 1995, WGF grew out of the philanthropic endowments of Henry A. Wallace, 33rd Vice President of the United States, co-architect of the New Deal, and former US Secretary of Agriculture under Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Wallace, a progressive committed to empowering people and making democracy work in service of the common good, believed it was critical to fight moneyed elites for control of government and in order to defend the planet's precious resources. Today, as a direct result of that legacy, we work with partners and grantees to realize a healthy and sustainable environment, strengthen democracy and human rights, and fight the increasing power and concentration of corporate interests in an era of rising inequality.
To accomplish these goals, we support and partner with non-profit organizations and social movements seeking systemic solutions in four program areas: democracy, environment, corporate accountability, and women's rights. Additionally, we advance priorities in two "global spotlight" areas: Southern Africa and Energy Access and Justice. To move these priorities forward, WGF uses all of our assets: grants, investments, networks, and our own advocacy voice. We have aligned our endowments to our program priorities and leverage our unique social capital to amplify the demands of movement partners.
In additional to our grant-making, WGF also has a long history of mission-related investing and has long supported and driven integration between program priorities and social impact investment strategies, including for gender, racial and climate justice. We also helped seed the work of the movement to divest from fossil fuels and invest in clean and renewable climate solutions.
Responsibilities will include:
· expanding relationships with media and journalists for expanded amplification of WGF priorities and issue areas, with human rights-focused, philanthropy-centered, and/or global/UN-specific media serving as particular priorities.
· building out WGF's list of media contacts and helping with press outreach,
· leading the creation of a CMS-based email platform that includes a periodic WGF newsletter;
· drafting, editing, and scheduling social media content for the foundation,
· assisting in the compilation and creation of summaries and reports,
· assisting in managing regular contact and meetings with WGF consultants,
· assisting in planning and execution of events, campaigns, and initiative,
· assisting in the budgetary and administrative requirements of the Communications function.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be a New York City-based graduate student in journalism, communications, public relations/affairs, or marketing with 1-2 years of existing experience in a social justice/human rights/ climate media role. Additional consideration will be given to recent postgraduates or media consultants willing to work part-time. The Fellow will have excellent writing skills and an appetite for supporting WGF's priorities, issues, strategies, values, approaches and colleagues. They will bring passionate commitment and enthusiasm for WGF's values, style of advocacy, strategies and priorities.
The WGF team is highly collaborative and generative. We work at a fast pace, making flexibility, collegiality, and humor important characteristics.
Timeframe
We seek to have someone in place by April 2021. This is a one year position with possibility of renewal for the right candidate.
Compensation
This position will be part-time at 15 hours per week. Hourly compensation offered is $27.50. We actively welcome candidates from a wide range of backgrounds.
