Free Press is working to create a world where people have the information and opportunities they need to tell their own stories, hold leaders accountable, and participate in our democracy. We fight to save Net Neutrality, achieve affordable internet access for all, uplift the voices of people of color in the media, challenge old and new media gatekeepers to serve the public interest, end unwarranted surveillance, defend press freedom and reimagine local journalism.
We're hiring a policy counsel to work on cutting-edge, high-profile, and significant legal cases and rulemakings in proceedings before the Federal Communications Commission, Congress and the courts, as well as other federal and state agencies. They will work as part of a cross-disciplinary team at Free Press and in coordination with coalition partners, strategic allies and outside counsel, to maximize available resources and build our capacity to challenge well-financed opposition.
The policy counsel will work to advance internet freedom, press freedom, platform accountability and media reparations — putting pressure on media and tech companies, and policy makers, to transform media and technology policy to realize a just society.
A successful candidate will have a J.D. and 8+ years of directly relevant experience in media, technology and telecommunications policy, with experience in nonprofits and organizing preferred. This position is based in D.C., working remotely until our office reopens.
Starting salary is $85,000-$90,000 and will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. To counter pay inequality and uphold internal parity, we use a nonnegotiable starting salary system, while benchmarking our pay to competitive markets in the nonprofit sector.
We are actively seeking to build a diverse and inclusive team with a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives and skills. If you meet some of the qualifications in the job posting, we encourage you to apply or to reach out for more information. We know groups subjected to systemic oppression– including people of color, women, people from working class backgrounds, and people who identify as LGBTQ – are less likely to apply unless and until they meet every requirement for a job. Therefore, we strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or who are members of other communities who are marginalized.
