Power California harnesses the energy of young voters of color and their families to create a state that is equitable, inclusive and just for everyone who calls California home. We are a growing, statewide, multiracial civic engagement organization dedicated to building the power of young people at the ballot box so that we can reshape California, our democracy, and the systems and policies that harm our communities. Power California is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) charitable organization with a sibling 501(c)4 organization, PowerCA Action, and locations in Oakland, Fresno, and Los Angeles.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Organizing & Membership Director is a new position that will lead a growing area of work to build an active base of 16–24-year-old young people of color who are committed to winning and pushing an intersectional young people's agenda for a more just and equitable California. The director will oversee our 99Rootz youth organizing chapters in the Central Valley and create new membership chapters in priority regions, with an emphasis on Black youth, and Indigenous, rural, and other underrepresented communities. This position will lead and implement strategies and campaigns to build a statewide membership base of young people of color in key regions, particularly Black youth, and who are ready to take action to win governing power to advance policies and legislation that improve the social and economic conditions of young BIPOC and their families. The ideal candidate must be able to create strategies and develop and execute plans to meet strategic membership goals and to vision and create concrete road maps for how to get there.

The Organizing & Membership Director will manage the organizing department budget and will supervise the 99Rootz Director and eventually a small team of membership organizers, and will work closely with other department directors, reporting to the Associate Director. We are seeking someone with strong vision, a passion for power building and engaging young people, and keen strategic expertise who knows how to get things done to lead a new area of work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizational Management
  • Serves on the leadership team, actively participating in meetings, annual planning and evaluation, and co-managing organizational culture and dissemination of organization policies
  • Actively participates in shared leadership team responsibilities, including, but not limited to, planning and preparing for staff meetings, staff trainings and planning process, fund development and fundraising campaigns, and electoral organizing campaigns
  • Actively participates in regular campaign strategy team meetings and cross team collaborations, prepping for and facilitating meetings when needed
  • Collaborates closely with supervisor, Executive Director, and Deputy Director, regarding campaign strategy for both nonprofit entities
Membership Strategies and Planning
  • Leads the organization's overall efforts to recruit, grow and engage an active membership base of young people of color, particularly Black youth, in priority regions, by developing and implementing strategies and campaigns
  • Establishes short and long-range plans and goals to achieve organization's membership objectives
  • Plans and launches new membership chapters of 18–24-year-olds in key regions across the state
  • Plans and coordinates membership drives and youth-centered culture-forward strategies and programmatic activities to engage and activate members and alliance partners
  • Plans convenings (online and in person) to bring members and chapters togethers
  • Works closely with Field Director to identify and coordinate engagement opportunities for members to participate in voter engagement campaigns
  • Works closely with Narrative & Policy Director to develop and implement strategies to recruit, engage and activate members through policy advocacy and online digital actions
  • Works with supervisor to build membership structure, infrastructure, and guidelines
Membership Management and Coordination
  • Oversees our youth organizing program, 99Rootz, in the Central Valley to build a base of rural young leaders of color and connect them and alumni to statewide membership base
  • Manages statewide PowerCA membership base through regular communication and activation
  • Creates, develops, and directs new membership chapters in priority regions, with an emphasis on Black youth, and Indigenous, rural, and other underrepresented communities
  • Leads development of membership materials, swag, political education trainings, and ensures that chapters have access to technology and other resources
  • Develops methods for measuring, tracking, and strengthening member engagement
  • Works with Data Strategist and IT Director to track membership growth and engagement
Movement Building
  • Works closely with supervisor to coordinate 20+ Power California Alliance partner organizations when needed
Staff Supervision
  • Recruits, hires, trains, manages, and develops the 99Rootz Director and 1–2 Organizers
  • Ensures coverage for critical functions of unfilled directly-reporting positions, consulting with supervisor and other members of the Leadership Team as necessary
Budget Management
  • Plans and manages the organizing and membership department budgets for both the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, as approved by the Executive Director within the overall organizational budgets
  • Reviews and authorizes all organizing and membership department bills for payment; ensures timely payment and proper accounting coding for accurate budget to actual reporting

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 4 years' experience in youth, community, or labor organizing with a focus on racial and gender justice
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in organizational leadership position and/or as a program director, growing a base of constituents to support an issue or campaign
  • Minimum 2 years' experience supervising staff and managing budgets
  • Significant experience organizing Black, Indigenous, rural or other underrepresented communities
  • Proven track record of leading and implementing successful campaigns that built and engaged an organizing base
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and facilitation skills
  • Strong critical thinking, planning and strategy development skills and experience.
  • Able to hold "big picture" and long term strategies with day to day priorities and details for successful implementation
  • Excellent cross-cultural skills, including the ability to communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds, including high school students, young adults, community and elected leaders, philanthropic leaders, and so on
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment, especially during campaigns; independent, proactive and able to work under the pressure of tight deadlines and changing priorities; comfortable with on-the-ground learning
  • Is self motivated, organized and able to be strategic, flexible and nimble when landscape shifts or opportunities arise
  • Track record of accomplishing organizational goals, taking advantage of opportunities and challenges, and employing best strategies to achieve goals
  • Passion for and experience in working with young people of color, low-income immigrants, and refugees, especially from an intersectional perspective, including LGBTQIA+ communities
  • Familiarity with 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PAC structures a plus
  • Flexible, team-oriented approach to problem-solving, knows how to work collaboratively with other team members to get input and support for membership strategies
  • Strong time management, organizational, and work planning skills; ability to adjust work activity as needed and manage multiple projects according to timelines
  • Must be computer-literate, with basic skills in word processing, spreadsheets, web/email applications, and other work-related applications; Macintosh knowledge preferred
  • Ability to take initiative in driving strategies and troubleshooting; works well independently
  • Ability to keep sensitive information confidential, exercise good judgment, stay aware of others' needs
  • Commitment to embodying the change we seek; able to act with integrity, compassion, and openness to feedback
  • Bilingual or multilingual a plus
  • Some nights and weekends required; during campaign season, it's frequent
  • Must have a working cell phone with a data plan and a working home Internet connection with adequate speed
  • Ability to travel frequently, within California and nationally, for periods of 1 to 3 days at a time, up to 6 times per year
  • Must have unlimited access to a reliable automobile and have the ability to drive; valid California driver's license and, if driving own car, proof of adequate insurance coverage required
  • Based in or near Los Angeles, Fresno, or Oakland, California (within 25 miles); some telework privileges may be granted

  • Salary range of $80,000–$90,000
