Power California harnesses the energy of young voters of color and their families to create a state that is equitable, inclusive and just for everyone who calls California home. We are a growing, statewide, multiracial civic engagement organization dedicated to building the power of young people at the ballot box so that we can reshape California, our democracy, and the systems and policies that harm our communities. Power California is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) charitable organization with a sibling 501(c)4 organization, PowerCA Action, and locations in Oakland, Fresno, and Los Angeles.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Development Associate, a key member of the development team, contributes to fundraising strategies, writes grant proposals, and supports grant and donor management for both Power California, a 501(c)(3) organization, and its sibling 501(c)(4) nonprofit, PowerCA Action. This position submits grant requests, maintains foundation and grant data, conducts grant prospect research, and manages development deadlines, under the direct supervision of the Development Manager. Further, the Development Associate manages both entities' online donation platforms, produces donor acknowledgment letters and collateral materials, and supports grassroots fundraising campaigns.

The ideal candidate is able to craft well-written funding proposals, reports, and appeal letters in a clear, concise, and compelling manner, per deadline. The Development Associate supports development work and fundraising efforts for our two entities' political campaigns to drive large-scale change across California.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Foundation and Corporate Grants
  • Prepares grant applications; writes compelling, effective proposals, correspondence, and other documents for both the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) sibling entities, for approximately 30 funders per year, per the style required by the Development Director
  • Conducts ongoing foundation research and prospecting, as assigned
  • Coordinates closely with Development Manager to monitor progress of grant proposals
  • Collects information from program leads and compiles for grant reporting and supporting supervisor
  • Assists in developing organizational annual reports, newsletters, and funder materials
  • Communicates with funding organizations regarding the status of grant applications and reports
  • Builds positive professional relationships with existing and potential funding sources
Individual Donations
  • Writes for, supports, and updates online donation platform web pages for both sibling entities
  • Assists supervisor, Development Director, and Executive Director on individual fundraising strategies and long-term planning for both sibling entities
  • Assists supervisor with the creation and dissemination of appeal letters, including but not limited to writing, proofreading, editing, and coordinating digital fundraising materials
  • Supports the planning and execution of fundraising campaigns and special event activities
  • Produces and sends IRS-compliant acknowledgment letters timely for funders and donor letters, as needed
Data Management
  • Enters all donation and funder contact and relationship tracking in CRM, keeping all development records up-to-date
  • Enters the data for all fundraising income for both sibling entities in CRM
  • Works closely with finance staff to track the flow of all individual donations to both sibling entities, following all internal controls policies and reconciling all income monthly
  • Maintains development calendar to ensure timely submission of grant letters of inquiry, grant proposals, grant reports, other funder reporting requirements, and other key development dates

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 1 year's grant-writing experience in analogous settings required
  • Passion for and commitment to working with young people of color, low-income immigrants, and refugees, especially from an intersectional perspective, including LGBTQIA+ communities
  • Familiarity with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) structures, and PACs a plus
  • Strong time management, organizational, and work planning skills; ability to adjust work activity as needed and manage multiple projects according to timelines
  • Experience with CRM databases for fundraising data management preferred
  • Must be computer-literate; Macintosh knowledge preferred
  • High level of accuracy and strong attention to detail
  • Works well independently
  • Excellent cross-cultural skills, including the ability to communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to develop compelling stories; a passion for writing
  • Flexible, team-oriented approach to problem-solving
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment; independent, proactive and able to work under the pressure of tight deadlines and changing priorities; comfortable with on-the-ground learning
  • Commitment to embodying the change we seek; able to act with integrity, compassion, and openness to feedback
  • Roots in labor, community organizing, coalition-building, and/or electoral engagement a plus
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills a plus
  • Some overtime and weekends required
  • Must have a working cell phone with a data plan and a working home Internet connection with adequate speed
  • Ability to travel regularly, within California, for periods of 2 to 4 days at a time, up to 6 times per year
  • Must have unlimited access to a reliable automobile and have the ability to drive; valid California driver's license and, if driving own car, proof of adequate insurance coverage required
  • Based in or near East Los Angeles, California strongly preferred (within 25 miles); open to the possibility of Oakland or Fresno

  • Salary range of $50,000–$60,000
