Survey Outreach Coordinator


The National Center for Transgender Equality seeks an outreach coordinator for the new US Transgender Survey (USTS) for a period of six months. The USTS will be the second iteration of and follow up to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey (published in 2011 in a report called "Injustice at Every Turn"). The Survey Outreach Coordinator will work with the USTS Survey Project Manager to develop, coordinate, and implement an outreach plan to ensure that transgender people throughout the U.S. take the survey. The candidate will collaborate with transgender and allied individuals and organizations nationwide to establish a network to distribute the survey.
Located in Washington, DC, this position presents an incredible opportunity to ensure the successful implementation of a survey that will significantly contribute to the knowledge base about transgender people. The survey will include all kinds of people on the trans spectrum, including those who identify as non-binary, and will be conducted in English and Spanish. The ideal candidate will be bilingual and will be an outgoing, self-starter with strong experience in field organizing and coalition building.

NCTE's primary role is to support and advocate for policy change at the local, state and federal level, as well as to use the media to educate society about transgender people. NCTE has a serious commitment to approaching and engaging in its work with an awareness of how racial and economic justice is intertwined and connected to transgender justice and a commitment to ensuring that policymakers and society understand the connection as well.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop a survey outreach plan: Work with the Survey Project Manager and research team to develop an outreach plan to ensure that transgender people throughout the U.S. take the survey. This will include reaching out to trans, LGBTQ, and allied organizations and individuals in advance of the survey fielding period to gather support for the survey and ask that they push out the survey to their lists and networks.
  • Implement the outreach plan and coordinate outreach efforts:Utilize a variety of methods to connect with individuals and organizations to describe the purpose of the USTS and benefits to trans community, including social media and in-person meetings. Engage diverse communities in efforts to build support for completing the survey, including communities of color and communities of faith.
  • Maintain good relationships with organizations:Manage relationships with organizations that will be distributing the survey to their lists throughout the outreach period to ensure the successful implementation of the survey.
Qualifications
  • Experience: Experience in community organizing, coalition building, education, and/or policy advocacy (in a paid or volunteer position).
  • Cultural competency: Ability to work in and with a range of diverse transgender communities
  • Creativity and innovation: Ability to see opportunities and develop new approaches for any task or activity
  • Self-direction: Ability to take initiative and be self-sufficient in a small organization environment
  • Communications: Skilled in speaking directly but sensitively about issues of race, class, gender, sexuality, and discrimination faced by the trans community. Ability to discuss the benefits of data collection within the trans community to address issues of discrimination and other aspects of societal oppression. Must be willing to serve as a bridge-builder between people and organizations who may not see issues related to research and advocacy efforts similarly
  • Collaborative spirit: Ability to work as a part of a team of hard-working, assertive, and energetic professionals, giving and taking input with a variety of staff
  • Prioritization: Ability to independently set and meet goals, prioritize, plan, and manage and complete work on deadlines
  • Time management: Excellent organizational and time-management skills, detail-oriented, including ability to manage multiple tasks independently
  • Commitment to social justice: A deep and nuanced understanding of issues affecting transgender people, racial and economic justice, and systems of inter-connected oppression is critical
  • Education level: No specific educational degree is required
  • Language Ability: Fluency in Spanish and English preferred.
