UDW Job Description:  Staff Writer, San Diego or Sacramento, CA



Job Summary:  United Domestic Workers of America (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930) seeks a Staff Writer to amplify the voices of homecare providers and America's working families.  The right person for this job will have a commitment to economic and social justice, and work with our team to create worker-centered communications. We are looking for someone who is an excellent writer and storyteller, with demonstrated ability to write smart, creative, and persuasive narratives. This position is based in San Diego or Sacramento.



Job Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Draft the vast majority of written materials for the Communications Department including press releases, blog posts, op-eds, speeches, media advisories, online and social media content, newsletter stories, and general talking points.  
  • Interview workers and assist them with documenting their stories and perspectives in writing.
  • Research and obtain background information to support the creation of written materials.
  • Tailor written content to different audiences.
  • Communicate complex material in a manner that is easily understood.
  • Maintain message consistency across a variety of platforms.
  • Proofread marketing and outreach materials.
  • Support other activities related to UDW's internal and external communications programs.





Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient in grammar and punctuation.
  • Works well under pressure and with tight deadlines.
  • Able to handle numerous projects at the same time and work independently.
  • Commitment to social and economic justice.
  • Well-organized, attentive to detail, and able to follow verbal instructions.
  • Software: MS Office Suite
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese a plus.
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours, sometimes including weekends, to complete projects and support campaigns.
  • Willingness to travel, as needed.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable car.
