Brandworkers Development Intern – Fall 2015

Are you passionate about food justice and workers' rights? Are you interested in researching foundation opportunities and getting to see the inner workings of a nonprofit startup environment? Brandworkers is based in Long Island City, Queens and brings local food production workers together for good jobs and a sustainable food system. You would be joining an incredible base of workers who lead their own campaigns for just, wholesome, and local food.
Brandworkers has a fast-paced work environment and we seek talented individuals who crave learning new skills and aren't afraid of tackling big projects. As an intern you will get to work with a wide range of staff, allies, and members, while spearheading real projects that will help us grow.
Our ideal candidate is someone who is a team-player and isn't afraid to dig deep into the work. Someone who is obsessed with how organizations tick and is creative and thoughtful when conducting research and engaging with a team. A talented writer who knows how to tell a story and deliver a clear message.
What You Will Learn:
• The ins and outs of a lean nonprofit startup environment
• How to research potential donors, strategic partners, markets and industries.
• Goal-setting and meeting real metrics.
• Maximizing recordkeeping and foundation tracking through the use of Salesforce.
• Best practices around data hygiene and ensuring error-free and up-to-date data.
• How to write engaging correspondence, reports, proposals and donor appeals.
• Maintaining donor files and other development materials.
• Conducting mailings, filing, and various special projects.
• Plenty of additional opportunities in related projects.
What We Require:
• Exemplary writing and research abilities.
• Desire to learn more about fundraising and philanthropy.
• Mastery of Office suite and email productivity tools/techniques
• High computer and digital literacy, with a tendency for low-learning curve when it comes to adapting to new technologies.
• Interested in mastering digital tools including Asana, Salesforce, Dropbox, Slack, and Mailchimp.
• Friendly, with a good sense of humor
• Understands and embraces the saying, 'The details are not the details. They make the design.'
• Highly creative mind a plus, with a special ability to tell stories through words and other mediums
• A demonstrated commitment to Brandworkers' mission and values.
We value the work and contribution of interns. We go the extra mile to make sure you receive the proper academic credits and learning experience that fits your career goals. You will become extremely knowledgeable in foundation fundraising, a master of Salesforce and data management, and an understanding of the right tactics and strategies to build resources for a startup organization. You will also learn how to work in an exciting environment and have ample opportunity to network with food justice and workers' rights leaders and other professionals in the non-profit, labor and food justice field.
Details:
Flexible within business hours (9:00 am to 5:00 pm). A firm commitment of 10 to 15 hours per week is required. The internship will start at a mutually agreed upon date and may continue through the 2015-2016 academic year depending on mutual interest and satisfactory performance. This is a paid internship and we welcome students who require academic credit.
Option to telecommute is available after orientation period.
