[jobsthatareLEFT] Pennsylvania PIRG, State Director, Philadelphia

Pennsylvania PIRG State Director

PIRG stands for the Public Interest Research Group. For more than 40 years, we've taken on issues where the public needs a champion — someone to stand up to powerful interests when they push for short-sighted, harmful policies that threaten the public's interest. We take the same non-partisan, fact-driven, result-oriented approach to tackle issues from money in politics to Wall Street reform to antibiotics in our food.

Pennsylvania PIRG is hiring a State Director. We're looking for an experienced political advocate who will be responsible for organizing, media outreach, recruitment, developing staff, fundraising and coalition-building in Pennsylvania.

The State Director will be taking on issues of extreme importance to every-day Pennsylvanians like access to voting, protection from predatory lending and taking on Wall Street, campaign finance reform and addressing Citizens United, and other consumer issues where the public interest is at risk.

Responsibilities:

·      Campaign Coordination: Develop and execute plans to win on our issue campaigns. Assess opportunities for building political support for our agenda through coalition-building, grassroots organizing, and media outreach.

·      Intern and Staff Management: Recruit, train and engage staff, interns and volunteers to increase our impact and build our power.

·      Coalition Building: Cultivate relationships with diverse and powerful allies and expanding the constituencies supporting our efforts. This will include building a coalition of key allies and getting them actively involved in our campaigns including attending events and participating in press conferences.

·      Media Outreach: Serve as a public spokesperson through media events, press releases, op-eds and other visibility tactics with a goal of building name recognition for the organization, educating the public about our issues, and demonstrating support for our positions.

·      Organizing: Build a network of engaged volunteers across the state through traditional grassroots organizing and online organizing tactics.

·      Fundraising: Write grant proposals, build relationships with foundation staff, and meet with large donors, all to bring more resources to campaigns we're running to protect our PIRG. Work with our citizen outreach staff to build and develop our membership base.

·      Advocacy: Bring problems and solutions to the attention of decision-makers: state legislators, the Governor's staff, state regulators, local officials, and federal representatives. Build relationships with key players in Pennsylvania and in the region.

Qualifications:  Minimum 5 years of professional experience in grassroots organizing, organization building, and/or campaign politics. Related advanced degrees, such as a J.D. or master's degree, may count towards experience. Qualified candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to Political issues and to citizen-based social change, experience in state-level political advocacy and organizing, a proven ability to recruit, train and develop staff, the ability to raise money, and demonstrated success in building relationships with the full spectrum of political stakeholders.

Compensation & Benefits:

Compensation for this position is commensurate with the relevant professional experience and/or advanced degrees that a candidate has. PennPIRG offers a competitive benefits package.
