Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for an Advocacy Manager on the Poverty to Prosperity team. The Advocacy Manager will support the policy team by collaborating with national and local partner organizations, elected officials, the media, and other influencers to coordinate advocacy efforts and campaigns around the team's policy priorities. The Advocacy Manager will also work with the editors and producers of the TalkPoverty blog and the weekly radio show at TalkPoverty.org to identify opportunities and strategies to advance solutions to cut poverty and boost opportunity. Finally, the Advocacy Manager will help develop a national network of low-income people and service providers who share their personal stories with American Progress in order to take action on the Center's priorities.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with national- and state-level stakeholders and coalitions to build support for key federal and state priorities.
  • Develop and oversee the Poverty to Prosperity national story network by engaging low-income people and service providers to share their personal stories and deploying them to the media and policymakers in support of the team's priorities.
  • Support the team's messaging and communications strategy by identifying timely and creative opportunities in the media to frame our products and policy proposals as part of larger national conversations about poverty and income inequality.
  • Work with other teams at American Progress to leverage the organization's full communications, outreach, and grassroots resources toward building support for policy priorities.
  • Support the Vice President with grant reporting, fundraising, budgeting, and other team administrative needs.
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least three years of experience in communications or advocacy for a nonprofit/advocacy group or campaign.
  • Exceptional project management experience with very strong attention to detail and the ability to manage quick-turnaround deliverables, as well as long-term strategy implementation, reporting, and metric-tracking.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working in a coalition with national organization partners.
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Experience implementing an issue-based communications strategy, including utilizing social and traditional media effectively.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills; must be able to convey complex issues in clear and simple terms.
  • Self-starter, entrepreneurial, and creative thinker.
  • Ability to absorb key policy issues and debates quickly and thoroughly.
  • Commitment to the organization's mission and goals.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
