Overview:
As an integral member of the Major Gifts and Foundations team, the Prospect Researcher will develop a proactive research plan that supports leadership, high-level fundraisers, program staff and board members in identifying, gathering and organizing information about our most promising prospective and current donors. Clear goals will be established for identifying individuals and foundations capable of giving $10,000+ donations to Greenpeace in the U.S. and abroad, as well as proactively researching all highly-rated donors and providing in-depth profiles as requested by the team. In addition, the Prospect Researcher, in collaboration with the Director of Major Gifts and Foundations is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures to maintain accurate, confidential files and information, with all policies and procedures adhering to agreed upon ethical standards.

 

Responsibilities:

The Prospect Researcher is a member of the Major Gifts and Foundations Team, which is responsible for raising significant funds on an annual basis for the organization through securing five, six and seven figure gifts and grants from individuals and foundations.

 

Specifically, the Prospect Researcher will be responsible for the following:

 

  • Leading efforts to systematize prospect research efforts across the entire Development Department.
  • Managing the relationship with Wealth Engine, our primary research tool, and in conjunction with the Director of Major Gifts and Foundations, working with Development Department managers to use this research in the most effective and organized way possible.
  • Qualifying major gift prospects by researching and analyzing individuals,     family foundations and institutional foundations for giving potential and inclination to give in order to establish priorities and strategies for the successful cultivation and solicitation of donor
  • Training and mentoring all development programs in ways to identify individuals with the inclination and capacity to give $10,000+ donations.
  • Preparing detailed and up-to-date research briefings on prospects and/or current donors for development staff, board members, the Executive Director and program staff in advance of calls, donor visits and events in order to obtain optimal outcome
  • Presenting and analyzing donor research for the Major Gifts team during regularly scheduled meetings.
  • Serving as a point of reference and training for colleagues across the global organization to identify supporters interested in funding global efforts.
  • Assisting Major Gifts Officers in identifying opportunities/events/gatherings in key geographical regions for outreach to pools of potential donors.
  • Devising and implementing an ongoing plan for obtaining contacts from campaigners, senior staff, and board members for further research.
Qualifications:

Successful applicants will be resourceful and independent, and comfortable working within the framework of an integrated development program and team-oriented environment.

 

Ideal applicants will have an understanding of non-profit fundraising and experience with multiple research tools and methodologies. They will display strategic thinking, and an ability to build systems and perform on tight timelines.

 

Other preferred skills and abilities include:

 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Greenpeace programs and values
  • 3-5+ years fundraising and/or research experience, preferably for a charitable organization
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize data from a wide variety of sources, and present the resulting information in a clear summary
  • Adaptable to shifting priorities and deadlines
