Overview:

Greenpeace is the largest environmental campaigning organization. We use creative and confrontational tactics to run effective and hard-hitting campaigns that inspire our members and help protect the planet. These environmental campaign areas include climate, protecting the oceans, and stopping deforestation.

 

The staff attorney will be responsible for handling a variety of legal matters under the supervision of the General Counsel.



Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal advice to project teams and departments.  
  • Conduct research and write memoranda on various legal issues, including employment, environmental, tax-exempt and criminal law.
  • Draft and review contracts, leases and other legal documents.
  • Provide pre-publication legal review of public information.
  • Brief activists on substantial legal risks and rights regarding nonviolent direct actions.
  • Provide risk assessments for the Senior Management Team.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel on various legal matters requiring subject area expertise.
  • Other duties as assigned by the General Counsel.
Qualifications:

Education:

  • JD Degree

Skills:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong legal research and analysis skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal relations skills.
  • Careful attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively on multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
  • Commitment to the principles of peaceful direct action.

 


Experience/Accomplishments:

  • Membership (or eligibility to waive into) D.C. Bar.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience as a practicing attorney preferred.
  • Experience in drafting contracts and performing other transactional work preferred.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas of law a plus: (Tax-Exempt Organizations, Criminal, Employment, Environmental)
