[jobsthatareLEFT] Development Director - Demand Progress (DC/NY)

Development Director

Demand Progress is a leading national grassroots group with two million affiliated activists who fight for basic rights and freedoms needed for a modern democracy. Our recent advocacy campaigns include helping to secure a historic win for Net Neutrality and an open Internet; mobilizing in support of national privacy reform; and leading grassroots mobilization against the influence of big money in politics.

We are seeking an experienced development director to join our team and lead our fundraising efforts, including outreach to foundations and individual donors, in order to support and enhance our work on Internet freedom and open government, as well as our money-in-politics and financial reform work through our Rootstrikers project (Rootstrikers.org).

Essential roles and responsibilities

We are looking for candidates who will excel at working in conjunction with other senior staff to:
  • Research and prospect for potential funders. The ideal candidate will be able to research potential funders in our core issue spaces, including civil liberties, Internet freedom, open government, and money-in-politics, and financial reform. They will also have the ability to identify new and non-traditional funders and opportunities to support our work. Ideal candidates will have at a minimum a baseline familiarity with existing funders in our core issue spaces.
  • Conduct funder outreach. This will include outreach to potential funders and keeping in close contact with existing funders and program officers about Demand Progress's current and prospective work. It will also entail travel to networking and fundraising events, conferences, and meetings.
  • Manage grants. Candidates should be skilled and extremely organized when it comes to writing grant applications; overseeing budgets and deadlines; and drafting interim and final reports for funders.
  • Craft collateral for funders. Candidates should be adept at creating materials, including digital products, that communicate Demand Progress's high-impact work in a way that is compelling and creative to funders and our members.
  • Support member fundraising. Demand Progress has a robust membership-based fundraising program, and the Development Director will be expected to contribute to preparing communications to our member base about our advocacy and the value of supporting Demand Progress campaigns.

Location

The position will involve telecommuting, with a strong preference for individuals based in Washington, DC, or New York City. Travel will be periodically required.

Salary

Demand Progress will offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience. A health insurance coverage stipend will be provided, as well as retirement plan contributions. Demand Progress will cover travel expenses. The position is at-will.

Demand Progress is open to a variety of potential salary structures including a flat salary, a mix of a base salary and a commission, or a commission alone.

Experience

Candidates will have a strong background in development and fundraising for non-profit or activism organizations, with 5-7 years of work experience.

About Demand Progress

Demand Progress is a leading national grassroots group with two million affiliated activists who fight for basic rights and freedoms needed for a modern democracy. We work to win progressive policy changes for ordinary people through organizing and grassroots lobbying. We focus on issues of civil liberties, government reform, and money in politics.

We run online campaigns to rally people to take action on the issues that affect them — by contacting Congress and other leaders and spreading the word in their own communities. We work in Washington to provide an advocate for the public in the decisions that affect our lives.
