OVERVIEW:

 

Florida has the fourth largest legally permanent resident (LPR) population in the country, with approximately 1.17 million permanent residents living throughout the state. In Miami-Dade County there are over 600,000 residents that are eligible for naturalization, many of which are Latino and Caribbean residents. Miami-Dade also has the fourth highest income inequality in the United States.

 

The South Florida AFL-CIO and its union affiliates, with community partners including the Florida Immigrant Coalition, are working to improve the lives and working conditions of everyone who resides in our communities, regardless of their immigration status.

 

We are launching an Immigrant Organizing Program to engage immigrant workers who may be eligible for citizenship to access the support and services they need to become citizens and organize for better workplace conditions and stronger communities.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

-Advancing work at the intersections of workers' rights and immigrants, unions and community organizations to build and strengthen this intersection in South Florida

-Leading strategies to advance immigrant workers' rights, support Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) seeking citizenship and to build support within the Florida labor movement for immigrant workers' rights as a key strategic priority

-Representing the South FL AFL-CIO in coalition spaces in order to strengthen collaborative efforts, innovate existing strategies, and incubate new strategies and approaches

-Reaching out directly one-on-one to immigrant workers in union and non-union workplaces to encourage them to join their union and become citizens if eligible

-Organizing information sessions and legal clinics with partners to assist LPRs seeking to apply for citizenship

-Conducting research on immigrant workers, workplaces and communities to support outreach efforts

-Advance strong, authentic relationship-building with partner organizations, members, clergy and congregations, staff, and other stakeholders

-Conduct and help design educational trainings, presentations, and other forums for immigrant workers, unions, community organizations, clergy and congregations working together

-Writing and producing content for communications

-Working with communications staff on social media and other strategies to reach out to immigrant workers

-Operate database, systems, and documentation of work

-Recruit, train, and support volunteers for citizenship clinics, trainings, and other work

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE HAS THE FOLLOWING:

 

-Strong, demonstrated commitment to workers' rights, immigrant rights, and racial, social, and economic justice

-2-5 years of experience in grassroots community or faith-based organizing and/or union organizing

-Demonstrated capacity for one-on-one conversations with workers, elected officials, and clergy

-Experience with and knowledge of unions, immigrant rights, faith-based and community organizations

-Deep knowledge of one or more immigrant communities in South Florida

-Fluency in English and Spanish and/or Haitian Creole

-Willingness and flexibility to work long, irregular hours including occasional weekends

-A Florida driver's license, a car and insurance

-Strong written and communication skills
