Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a grassroots movement of American mothers, fathers, citizens, and survivors fighting for public safety measures that protect people from gun violence. Since its inception after the tragedy at Sandy Hook School, Moms Demand Action—part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest national gun violence prevention advocacy organization, with 3.5 million supporters— has established a chapter in every state of the country. These chapters are led by a dedicated and passionate group of volunteers who are the heart and soul of our movement—much of our success to date can be attributed to the work of our dynamic volunteer base.
We are hiring a full-time organizer to ensure the success of Initiative 1491 (Extreme Risk Protection Orders) in Washington State. Close family are often first to notice warning signs when someone has become a threat to themselves or others. If passed, this initiative would allow family members to petition a judge to temporarily remove access to guns when someone has become dangerous. The Extreme Risk Protective Order (ERPO) process provides an opportunity to intervene before dangerous warning signs escalate into murder or suicide—while requiring a high standard of proof before a person becomes prohibited.
The organizer will work to develop chapter leadership, will grow the organization in breadth and depth, and will hit tactical goals relevant to the Extreme Risk Protection Order campaign.
In many cases, the organizer will work with Moms who are already experienced and invested in this organization and this campaign, asking them to attend or coordinate events or training them to take on new positions. In other cases, the organizer will recruit new members to Moms Demand Action, introducing them to gun violence prevention issues and training them in basic campaign and leadership skills.
The position will start immediately and run through November 8, 2016.
Responsibilities include:
- Recruiting volunteers to participate in campaign events
- Train new volunteers on basic campaign skills such as petitioning, phone-banking, and event organizing
- Developing volunteers to take on larger roles and deepening their investment in Moms Demand Action
- Strategic campaign planning
- Track work and report to Organizing Manager
- Speak compellingly about Moms Demand Action and Extreme Risk Protection orders at events
- Achieve specific and measurable signature gathering and recruitment goals
- Traveling regularly throughout King County and occasionally to other areas like Olympia, Bellingham, or Spokane
Qualifications include:
- Passion for the issue
- 1-3 years experience in grassroots organizing
- Demonstrated success in working with a variety of demographics
- Personal experience building a group and delegating leadership
- Proven success developing volunteers beyond basic campaign skills
- Organized/good at tracking, reporting, planning
Must have valid driver's license.
