Environmental Justice Organizer (Hampton Roads)


New Virginia Majority (NVM) is Virginia's leading civic engagement organization.  We mobilize and organize voters of color and residents across the state. Our year-round approach to organizing involves mass scale voter outreach, linked to community organizing campaigns and intensive leadership development.  NVM is currently expanding its team. We are seeking conscious and skilled individuals with a deep commitment to social change.

The Environmental Justice Organizer reports to the Organizing Director. S/he will work closely with the Policy Associate and Organizing Director to do grassroots work and keep potential voters, activists, and community members engaged in the legislative  process. The Organizer will have a comprehensive understanding of climate change and the ways it disproportionately impacts people of color and low-income communities.

Responsibilities include: door-to-door canvassing, identifying and training leaders,  attending meetings and events in the community, and providing accurate information on climate justice to potential voters.

Primary Responsibilities

Organizing:

  • Recruit new members and existing members to assist/volunteer for climate grassroots efforts.

  • Identify and build a network of leaders in Norfolk and Portsmouth to address climate change

  • Work with policy and organizing teams to develop local and/or state  campaign(s) around the effects of sea level rise for people of color and low-income communities.  

  • Empower these communities to give valuable input in all public participation forums, including public hearings before members of the General Assembly and local town halls.

  • Plan and facilitate community meetings around campaign(s) and citizen feedback.

  • Coordinate with the Policy Associate on possible legislative options.


Coalition Building

  • Cultivate existing relationships within the broader environmental community.

  • Build coalitions with climate change and environmental justice allies in the community.

  • Collaborate with other environmental organizations on statewide and local collective actions.


Administrative/Operations

  • Utilize database(s) and software to track all outreach, recruitment, and turnout for events.

  • Evaluate progress towards campaign goals through tracking activity.  

  • Attend events of interest outside of Hampton Roads, as needed.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum three (3) election cycles OR one (1) year of work experience in climate change related policies and issues.

  • Experience organizing voter engagement and canvassing operations.

  • Strong commitment to social and racial justice.

  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently and under pressure, while meeting project goals and deadlines.

  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

  • Excellent writing, organizational, and overall communications skills.

  • Superior ability to problem-solve.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with VAN, NationBuilder, or similar voter/grassroots programs; creating lists and cutting turf in said programs is an added plus.

  • Demonstrated abilities to build professional relationships, at both the grassroots and grasstops levels.

  • Demonstrated success organizing African Americans


Salary and Benefits

This position is full-time and is based in the Norfolk/Portsmouth area of Hampton Roads. New Virginia Majority provides excellent benefits, including health, vision, dental, and stipends for phone and transportation. Salary to be determined based on relevant experience and other qualifications.
