Kairos Fellow Digital Campaigner 2017
Location: (Multiple states)
Department: Kairos Fellowship
Type: Temporary to Full Time
Min. Experience: Mid Level
The OPEN-US Kairos Fellowship is in its second year and has expanded from a six month to a year long paid on-the-job training program for emerging digital campaigners of color. Kairos, an ancient Greek word, refers to "the right or opportune moment for action."
In recent years, we have witnessed an inspiring movement for human rights that is calling attention to structural violence, racism, and inequality in the United States. Technology and digital campaigning have fundamentally changed how we organize. Yet there is often an access gap when it comes to leaders of color employing these cutting-edge tools.
The Kairos Fellowship is designed to address the racial disparity that exists within the digital movement by pairing robust recruitment with a training and mentorship program to develop a new group of tech-savvy campaigners of color.
Kairos will match and place 15 fellows at leading national and state organizations where fellows will work mostly on issue advocacy campaigns on the federal and state level. Fellows will join a team of talented campaigners and engage in the following duties:
- Reading news and social media and providing your analysis of current issues
- Proactively finding, developing, leading, and contributing to campaigns
- Writing a lot and creating compelling, well sourced content that motivates members and constituents to take action
- Developing creative campaign strategies and tactics
- Learning and utilizing the full range of tools—including, but not limited to, email, petitions, call alerts, and database—and keep learning as new tools come into existence
- Participating in the culture and team spirit of the organization you are placed with
Fellows will receive hands on training, mentorship, and a year long campaigner apprenticeship—from February 2017 - February 2018. Fellows will receive a full-time salary, benefits and the following support:
- Bootcamp-style digital training led by expert campaigners
- An experienced mentor
- Participation in ongoing trainings and webinars
- Participate in three in person gatherings
- Connection to a wide network of talented campaigners and digital leaders
- Peer support through the Kairos Fellowship cohort
Qualifications: We are looking for imaginative, quick thinking, self-motivated individuals with a preference for candidates with two or more years organizing experience. Candidates must possess deep ties to communities of color, a passion for social justice, a commitment to disrupting structural oppression, and a love for the internet and its vast potential for building progressive power and increasing civic engagement.
Please note that some of the placements are virtual and others are location based. The deadline to apply is November 30.
