Michigan House Democratic Caucus

DISTRICT ORGANIZER

 

The Michigan House Democratic Caucus is seeking thoughtful, driven, results-oriented, full-time District Organizers to join a team of passionate people, working dutifully to achieve our mission and put our state on the right path forward.

 

ROLE OVERVIEW

District Organizers have the meaningful responsibility to empower others to take action alongside them. We need organizers who are at their core relationship builders. You must be high energy, outgoing, enthusiastic, and willing to work long hours.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteer Base-Building and Mobilization: You will develop and oversee the constituent-driven, volunteer infrastructure needed to successfully share the Michigan House Democratic Caucus' legislative vision in your unique district by creating multiple pathways for people to take action, including - but not limited to - phone banks, canvasses, and house parties.

 

Community Organizing Training and Leadership Development: Conduct group training on constituent outreach skills, one-on-one coaching, and leadership development sessions with key staff and volunteers.

 

Communication and Organizational Visibility: Work with our communications team to increase the organization's media presence and name recognition through earned media and digital organizing.

 

TASKS & DAY-TO-DAY

  • Make volunteer phone calls, canvass door-to-door, attend house parties, and build attendance for earned media and town hall events.

  • Recruit community members to hold House Parties

  • Conduct one-on-one meetings to build buy-in with constituents and volunteers for the Michigan House Democratic Caucus' legislative agenda.

  • Participate in daily and weekly calls, trainings, and meetings with senior staff.

  • Manage and execute phone banks and canvasses, among other activities.

  • Plan other special constituency-driven events in order to reach residents of your unique district.

  • Grow the list of constituents willing to take action in whatever capacity in your district.

  • Track organizational progress (daily) and develop comprehensive reports (weekly).

  • Collaborate with Michigan House Democratic Caucus leadership to implement detailed organizing plans, tailored to your district.

  • Attend and present Michigan House Democratic Caucus' legislative agenda to your community, including but not limited to, county and municipal clubs, youth and issue-based organizations, and additional groups in order to mobilize your community for MHDC.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to be a self-starter, and to work independently toward agreed upon goals.

  • Skilled at sharing your personal story and using that story to build relationships with constituents and volunteers.

  • Candidates with at least 1 cycle of organizing experience.

  • Candidates with relationship-based organizing and community leadership development experience with personal story, one-on-one meetings, and building volunteer teams prefered.

  • Candidates from all academic disciplines beyond political science will be considered, including social work, communications, and liberal arts.

  • The ideal candidate is passionate about community organizing and movement building by embracing all people, traditions, and state culture.

  • Great energy and attitude.

  • An ongoing interest in continued learning and adaption based on best practices.

  • A willingness to give maximum effort no matter how big or small the task.

  • Respect the work and don't shy away from challenges or difficult conversations.

  • Exceptionally well-organized, with an ability to meet strict deadlines.

  • Ability to speak confidently (one-on-one and in groups) and write clearly.

  • Frequent travel, access to a vehicle, and access to a cell phone are required.

  • Candidates with experience building coalitions among diverse groups of people and experience in holding volunteers accountable are prefered.

  • Casework (constituency database), Google Docs, Dropbox, and Microsoft Office/Excel experience is prefered, but not required.
