ABOUT BREAKTHROUGH SAN FRANCISCO
Breakthrough San Francisco at SF Day School supports motivated San Francisco students on the path to college and trains outstanding college students for education careers. In 2017-18, we're serving 244 young people in grades five–twelve, providing intensive year-round academic enrichment and support; 89% will be the first in their families to attend a four-year college. Each year, we also train 32 Teaching Fellows through our highly selective eight-week summer teaching residency, and provide a meaningful service experience to roughly 150 volunteers.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Middle School Programs oversees all aspects of fifth - eighth grade students' experience at Breakthrough. You'll ensure students are participating actively in our year-round programming, succeeding academically, building supportive relationships, and embodying our core values of collaboration, excellence, gratitude, perseverance, and responsibility. You'll also build a strong relationship with each student and work collaboratively with their family members, teachers, and tutors to ensure their success.
We work to maintain a culture of strong community and high expectations among our student body so you'll help us handle all academic, behavioral, and social issues that arise. This position leads all student-facing aspects of our six-week summer academic program for rising fifth - eighth graders, and are closely involved with all aspects of our after-school program during the school year. Finally, you'll collaborate closely with our entire team and report to Breakthrough San Francisco's Executive Director.
THE ROLE IN DETAIL
STUDENT SUPPORT AND LEADERSHIP
- Serve as the main point of contact, year-round, for Breakthrough fifth - eighth grade students. Build strong relationships with each student, characterized by positive rapport and clear communication. Ensure each student participates actively in our program, succeeds academically, and embodies our core values.
- Regularly review student performance data (report cards, test scores, teacher feedback, attendance, etc).
- Promptly and effectively handle all academic, behavioral, and social issues that arise throughout the year.
- Maintain high expectations while always affirming each student's dignity and tremendous potential.
- Demonstrate a culture of strong community and high expectations among our student body.
- Provide coaching and leadership as needed to ensure each student is academically challenged and receiving the best possible support.
- Communicate regularly with family members, building a strong partnership that supports each student's success; utilize translation/interpretation as needed.
SUMMER PROGRAM
- Plan and prepare for all student and family-facing aspects of our summer program, working closely with Breakthrough's Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
- Lead student and family-facing aspects of our program, including Morning Meeting, All-School Meeting, and Silent Elective. Plan and lead our Pre-Summer Orientation, Back to Breakthrough Bash, Parent/Guardian-Teacher Conferences, and Celebration.
- Provide student supervision during arrival, passing periods, lunch, recess, study hall, and dismissal.
- Support Teaching Fellow selection, training, and management, including assisting with facilitation of faculty and grade-level meetings.
SCHOOL-YEAR PROGRAM
- Support planning and leadership of events including Back to Breakthrough Bash, end-of-semester Celebration, and Saturday events. Assist with facilitation of All-School Meetings.
- Provide student supervision during tutoring, study hall, recess, and dismissal.
- Support selection, training, and supervision of after-school program tutors, including training sessions and mid-semester check-ins.
- Support recruitment and selection of new Breakthrough students.
- Oversee middle school guidance process for fifth grade students and families.
ABOUT YOU
- At least 3-5 years of experience working with youth, preferably at the middle school level
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with first-generation college students and their families
- A willingness to hold students to high standards and achieve meaningful results
- A commitment to educational equity
- A knack for cultural competence and responsiveness
- A self-reflective mindset on your own performance and amibition for professional growth
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills
- Clear and direct interpersonal communication skills
- Supervisory/managerial experience highly desirable
- Fluency in Spanish and/or Cantonese a plus
