About the Office:
In April 2015, Mayor Bill de Blasio released One New York: The Plan for a Strong and Just City (OneNYC), the City's resilience strategy for inclusive growth and climate action. Under OneNYC, the City's climate actions have accelerated to align New York City with the Paris Agreement. This includes actions that are working to dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapt the City against the impacts of climate change. The Climate Policy and Programs team oversees these efforts from within the First Deputy Mayor's office.
About the Role:
The Assistant Director for Press and Communications is a key member of the Climate Policy and Programs (CPP) team and a senior member of CPP's External Affair team, reporting to the Deputy Director for External Affairs. The Assistant Director will support the Deputy Director with media outreach and response on behalf of the entire CPP team, including a central team and three offices overseen by the Senior Director: the Office of Environmental Coordination (OEC); the Office of Recovery and Resiliency (ORR); and the Office of Sustainability (MOS).
The Assistant Director for Press and Communications will identify positive press opportunities and developing strategic communications plans in close partnership with City Hall's press and communications teams. Additionally, the Assistant Director will execute responses to incoming press inquiries. The Assistant Director must be able to operate in a fast paced environment, with a high level of professionalism, often under short deadlines and in high-pressure situations.
A strong and demonstrated interest in climate change-related communications as well as the ability to both work independently and as part of a fast-moving team is required. The ideal candidate will be a strong writer with an understanding of traditional and social media, and have a background in public relations or journalism.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
§ Support the Deputy Director for External Affairs in ensuring the high quality performance of the External Affairs team
§ Assist with timely and accurate communication of public information about the de Blasio Administration's climate-related programs, projects, events, initiatives and issues to the media and the public
§ Research, develop and pitch positive stories about agency initiatives to local, community, ethnic and national media outlets
§ Act as a spokesperson as necessary
§ Develop and implement strategic messaging and events to ensure placement of positive news stories highlighting agency achievements and initiatives
§ Helping to ensure CPP's social media channels (@NYClimate) remain engaging and active, including occasionally live tweeting from events and monitoring commentary on the City's climate work
§ Serve as a daily liaison with the news media, including during occasional weeknights and weekends
§ Write and edit media advisories, press releases, statements, letters to the editor, articles for print and web based publications, speeches, testimony and other materials as needed
§ Maintaining the offices' database of media contacts, and identifying gaps in engagement with specific outlets and journalists and seeking to develop new relationships
§ Prepare draft correspondence, memos, talking points and briefing materials for executive staff
§ Prepare agency officials for interviews and public speaking opportunities
§ Interact and coordinate with other press staff at government agencies, offices of elected officials, and the City's network partners such as 100 Resilient Cities and C40
§ Plan and coordinate events, including press conferences, groundbreakings etc.
§ Monitor and track news media daily and coordinate the delivery of daily press clips
§ Handle special projects
§ Other tasks, as assigned
Preferred Qualifications:
§ A Master's degree in journalism or public relations, plus five (5) years of full-time paid experience in public relations, journalism or advertising, including two (2) years in an administrative or supervisory or capacity
§ A demonstrated understanding of issues relating to climate change mitigation and adaptation in a large urban setting, and/or the interplay of resilience, environmental policy, the built environment, energy, urban planning, and economic development
§ Extensive experience in communications, preferably for a government or non-profit organization
§ Experience working on-the-record with acting as spokesperson
§ Background in media relations, pre-existing relationships with NYC media a plus
§ Successful track record of pitching and placing proactive stories
§ Excellent verbal, writing and editing skills; excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated record as both a self-starter and team-player
§ Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with associates and the public
§ Excellent attention to detail, ability to multitask successfully and meet deadlines under pressure
§ Proficiency with social media and an understanding of the role digital tools play in strategic communications
