[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] JOB: National Campaign Director, The Health Initiative

National Campaign Director, The Health Initiative

The Health Initiative (THI) is a new organization built on the radical notion that while our country is divided on healthcare, we are – or could be – united on health.

Our goal is to shift the national conversation away from a fractured one focused on healthcare (i.e., insurance, hospitals, doctors, and prescriptions) to one focused on the factors that most impact Americans' health on a daily basis (i.e., access to healthy foods, affordable housing, transportation, and more). Ultimately, THI seeks to shift how the U.S. understands, talks about, funds, legislates, and delivers health equitably and sustainably.

To do this, we are launching a new campaign organization with a singular focus on this agenda. We will seek to bridge the divide between the worldview of policy and practice (on the one hand) and that of politics (on the other) when it comes to what is necessary to achieve health. Specifically, we will mobilize a diverse set of influencers in communities and in health and healthcare, as well as in policy, politics, philanthropy, and academia to build broad engagement around a shared vision.

The campaign will utilize an array of tactics including developing and disseminating new messaging and language; identifying and developing policy solutions that enable health; leveraging traditional and unconventional tools and strategies to achieve this agenda; aligning and/or mobilizing formal and grassroots leadership; and engaging with elected officials and candidates at the federal, state and local levels.

THI is seeking an experienced leader, strategist and manager to build and execute this nationwide effort to instigate a new conversation on health and healthcare. In doing so, the National Campaign Director will work closely with THI Founding Partners Rebecca Onie (CEO Emeritus and Co-founder of Health Leads) and Rocco Perla (former leader at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation).

Core Responsibilities:

·       Strategy and Campaign Planning: Work with Founding Partners to develop a focused and sustained, long-term strategy. Design and build the campaign structure and plan to execute the strategy. Identify state-level opportunities to create a model of reform that can be replicated;

·       Staff and Program Management: Run the day-to-day operations of the campaign. Set and track goals, priorities and timelines. Oversee staff to develop and implement work plans; provide coaching and leadership development opportunities. Determine staffing structure needed as campaign grows; recruit and hire new staff;

·       Budget and Fundraising: Oversee the finances of the campaign; set financial priorities and goals to ensure support for the campaign and staff; ensure that the campaign's funding is deployed in ways that move the mission forward;

·       Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement: Identify the influencers and alliances that, if mobilized, could break through the inertia of the current debate and achieve political wins. Mobilize those influencers and alliances to provoke a robust public debate on health; and

·       Messaging and Communications: Work with pollsters and team to develop national and state-based messaging. Oversee efforts to generate media attention that advances the campaign's position.

Qualifications:

·       A strong, insider-level understanding of the political process, but with an outsider's optimism, creativity, and desire to innovate and do things differently;

·       The ability to speak about issues in ways that resonate with people of all backgrounds and ideologies;

·       A deep understanding of how state and federal politics work, including experience working on national issue-based advocacy campaigns;

·       A track record of effectively leading and scaling a campaign or organization, building and managing teams, with an ability to communicate clear priorities and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders;

·       Experience developing and testing messaging, communicating with non-technical audiences, and developing and/or executing plans to generate media attention;

·       Experience overseeing multi-million-dollar budgets and understanding the impact of programmatic work on fundraising efforts;

·       A commitment to making change and winning over the long term, understanding that you may lose some battles along the way; and

·       Embodiment of THI's core values of building transformative relationships, exercising deep curiosity, and committing to equity.

This position is based in Boston, MA and will require significant travel.
