Political Coordinator, Clean Virginia


About us: Clean Virginia is fighting corruption in Virginia politics. Through our affiliated Political Action Committee, we support legislators and candidates for Virginia's General Assembly who refuse donations from publicly regulated electric monopolies. We design innovative campaigns to inform the public about the harmful impacts of monopoly corruption in Virginia's energy sector. And we engage in research and policy development so Virginia can become a nationwide clean energy leader. We believe that all Virginians, including low-income communities, communities of color and small businesses, should benefit from our growing clean energy economy.


About you: The Political Coordinator will hold primary responsibility for developing and executing Clean Virginia's political strategy across the state. S/he/they will liaise with elected officials, candidates, party officials and partner groups to drive our political priorities, from campaign finance to energy policy. The ideal candidate will be deeply familiar with Virginia's political landscape and closely monitor statewide and local elections and policy debates. The Political Coordinator will oversee the political program budget, fundraising strategies, materials and outreach. S/he/they will work closely with the Communications Coordinator and Research Coordinator and report to the Executive Director.


Duties and responsibilities:

  • Directs and oversees short- and long-term advocacy for legislation related to clean governance and promoting an equitable, just transition to clean energy.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with General Assembly leaders and staff, candidates and campaigns, political parties and political action committees.

  • Directs Clean Virginia's engagement in various electoral campaigns, including the development of campaign strategy, the allocation of resources, and the supervision of political staff.

  • Monitors and evaluates political and electoral activity, and public opinion.

  • Develops donor outreach plans, materials and talking points.

  • Holds primary responsibility for the activities of Clean Virginia Fund, Clean Virginia's affiliated Political Action Committee, including writing and filing financial reports on behalf of Clean Virginia Fund.

  • Ensures compliance to minimum standards in accordance with all government legislation, regulations and guidelines pertinent to the organization's role as a non-profit agency.

  • Works with the Executive Director to maintain budgetary and regulatory compliance within the electoral program.

  • Recruits, trains, and supervises interns in the Political department.

  • Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.

Qualifications
  • At least two years of experience in electoral politics and/or environmental advocacy, such as political campaign experience, legislative advocacy, fundraising and/or media relations. Preferably, prior experience in Virginia state politics.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • One to two years experience in grassroots organizing and constituent relations.

  • Prior experience working in partnership with volunteers.

  • Prior exposure to fiscal and business operations management.

  • A flexible approach to work, with a willingness to travel as needed and participate in programs occurring after typical business hours.

  • Demonstrated interest in government transparency, clean energy and the mission of Clean Virginia.
