About us: Clean Virginia is fighting corruption in Virginia politics. Through our affiliated Political Action Committee, we support legislators and candidates for Virginia's General Assembly who refuse donations from publicly regulated electric monopolies. We design innovative campaigns to inform the public about the harmful impacts of monopoly corruption in Virginia's energy sector. We also engage in research and policy development so Virginia can become a nationwide clean energy leader. We believe that all Virginians, including low-income communities, communities of color and small businesses, should benefit from our growing clean energy economy.
About you: The Research and Policy Coordinator will be responsible for producing primary research and collating secondary research to inform Clean Virginia's public information campaigns, legislative advocacy, and policy development. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth familiarity with the legal and regulatory structures that govern our energy economy and renewable energy policy in Virginia. They will also be deeply familiar with policy debate surrounding campaign finance reform and good governance. The Research and Policy Coordinator will oversee all research programming in concert with stakeholders and partner organizations. S/he/they will work closely with the Communications Coordinator and Political Coordinator and report to the Executive Director.
Duties and responsibilities
Develops and oversees a robust primary research and policy development program for Clean Virginia, providing in-house expertise on issues including: energy utility regulatory reform, the legal and regulatory barriers to advancing distributed and community-owned renewable energy, the intersection between utility reform, environmental justice and consumer protection, and campaign finance reform.
Presents results though clear and compelling reports, data visualizations, blog posts, speaking engagements, etc. Works with stakeholders to develop and share relevant research.
Stays up-to-date on energy trends and significant issues in the utility landscape.
Monitors and fact-checks public information disseminated by energy utilities.
Coordinates with volunteers supporting Clean Virginia's research activities.
Proposes a budget covering a portfolio of projects relating to the development and dissemination of research and special projects, and manages contracts with external researchers and consultants.
Coordinates with other organizations working on the advancement of clean energy in Virginia and harmonizes Clean Virginia's research and policy development efforts with like-minded groups.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
At least two years of experience in energy policy, environmental justice and climate change policy, electoral politics and/or the climate movement.
Demonstrated research accomplishments (memos, briefs, reports) using both qualitative and quantitative methods.
Excellent writing (from reports to blog posts) and presentation skills (data visualization).
Track-record of producing influential research or writing.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
A flexible approach to work, with a willingness to travel as needed and participate in occasional work-related activities that occur after typical business hours.
Demonstrated interest in government transparency, clean energy and the mission of Clean Virginia.
