JOB DESCRIPTION
Director, New American Majority Fund and New American Majority Action Fund
OVERVIEW:
The Democracy Alliance (DA) is a growing network of progressives who partner with, contribute to, and encourage collaboration among progressive organizations, strategists, and donors at the national, state, and local levels.
Over the last 14 years, nearly $2 billion has been organized to build and sustain elements of the progressive infrastructure – from multi-issue think tanks to a sophisticated media monitoring apparatus – that did not previously exist. Aided by DA strategy and funding, there have been numerous progressive electoral victories, and many progressive ideas and policies have been enacted – and achieved broad popular support.
Through a consultative process, the DA has set out ambitious goals that build on previous achievements. The DA seeks to build an America where progressives hold the reins of power and use them to make significant impact on several of our nation's greatest challenges: a fair democracy where everyone can participate; an inclusive economy that works for all; a planet that is healthy and safe; and an equitable and just nation. The DA is committed to addressing these issues together because they are deeply connected, and sustainable progress will build on that principle.
As it has in the past, the DA is committed to building progressive power that produces electoral and policy victories, and to the infrastructure that can support those efforts. In addition, the DA will make investments in state-based infrastructure and the key constituencies that comprise the New American Majority (voters of color, LGBTQ voters, young people, and women) and work closely with other communities that share our progressive values.
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Director will serve as the primary staff person responsible for the fundraising, investment process, and portfolio management of the New American Majority and New American Majority Action Funds (Funds). The Funds is a collaborative effort between individual and institutional donors designed to increase the independent political power of New American Majority organizations.
The New American Majority Funds and its sister 501(c)(4) fund address the chronic underinvestment in state-based organizations by providing resources to help them build independent political power. This power is leveraged to advocate for progressive policy change, mobilize underrepresented voters, and elect progressive champions.
Grantmaking priority is given to state-based organizations run by leaders from these communities: Latinx, Black, Native American, LGBTQ, and Asian American Pacific Islander. A state landscape analysis, comprehensive capacity assessment, regular benchmark monitoring, and the Advisory Board's strategic oversight help ensure that grants go to effective, inspiring organizations.
The Funds invest in these seven core capacities:
• Base building
• Mobilization capabilities
• Structural reform campaign tools
• Leadership pipeline
• Network connections
• Narrative setting
• Budget growth and sustainability
This full-time position will commence January 1. The Director will report to the Democracy Alliance's Vice President, will work directly with the Funds' Advisory Boards, and will manage the Funds' program staff. If you are a highly strategic, innovative, driven self-starter with experience in civic engagement and philanthropy, we encourage you to contact us about this position. Interviewing will commence in early December.
Washington, DC-based candidates are preferred.
DUTIES:
• With the Advisory Board and DA senior staff, fundraise for the Funds, helping to secure at least $10M in 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 support from individual and institutional donors for 2020 and grow the Funds in subsequent years.
• Build strong relationships with existing leadership in the civic engagement field and help support and facilitate collaboration between and among groups.
• Develop grantmaking recommendations for investments that meet the Funds' goals and objectives; including critical needs which are not being met by existing organizations in the field, such as capacity-building/training needs.
• Develop a process for monitoring and assessing the Funds' progress and regular reporting of that progress.
• Promote and communicate the Funds' mission and values to all stakeholders.
• Prepare grant proposals, grant reports, and other supplemental materials for the Funds.
• Manage regular communications with the Advisory Boards, developing budgets, strategy documents, plans, and agendas necessary for board meetings.
• Work collaboratively with the DA's other State POWER Funds, finding opportunities to align funding, where appropriate.
• Help to develop sessions at DA conferences and other events that highlight the work/grantees of the Funds and help to build awareness among donors.
• Ensure compliance with all 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 laws.
