The Alabama Democratic Party is seeking a Director of Communications to manage all aspects of the party's internal and external communications. The Communications Director will report to the Deputy Executive Director. The ideal candidate will have a strict attention to detail, stellar writing skills, a finely tuned sense of compelling storytelling, be comfortable working independently, have experience building relationships with the press, be skilled at coaching principals on messaging, and have a demonstrated commitment to advancing forward-thinking Democratic policies.
Responsibilities
- Developing and implementing long-term communications strategy for the state party
- Build, manage, and maintain local, national, and issue-based press lists and relationships
- Author rapid response, press releases, op-eds, video scripts, social media content, and talking points in line with the overall party communications strategy
- Build relationships with and coach elected officials and party principals on effective communication, storytelling, and messaging strategy
- Identifying and utilizing every opportunity for earned media highlighting party principals or issues of importance to the party
- Staffing and arranging media interviews for the ADP Chair, Vice-Chair, and other principals.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of professional, full-time work in communications, journalism, or campaigns
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as stellar grammatical and copy-editing skills
- Ability to think quickly, respond rapidly, and take initiative
- A strong commitment to forward-thinking, progressive policies that move the party and our voters forward
- Ties to Alabama or the Deep South are beneficial
While our team is working mostly remotely, this position will be based in Alabama as the COVID-19 pandemic permits. Compensation is $72,000-$84,000 per year and is commensurate with experience. Health and Dental benefits are provided at no cost to the employee. This is a full-time, exempt position that requires long and non-traditional hours, including nights and weekends.
