Public Education and Outreach Manager

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Equality California's canvass and phones operation is a powerhouse of grassroots education, mobilization and fundraising that brings our message and the opportunity to take immediate action straight to the people while bringing in a significant portion of the organization's income by recruiting thousands of new members every year. Our grassroots outreach team plays a critical role in achieving full and lasting equality for California's LGBT community.
The Public Education and Outreach manager provides the leadership within the grassroots team to win campaign victories, and builds Equality California's profile, and identifies, activates, and builds a diverse next generation of leaders and activists in the civil rights movement.
The best candidate for this position will be an experienced manager, a strategic campaign planner, a seasoned organizer, a motivating trainer, and a canvasser at heart. The candidates need to be adept at working and coordinating with a variety of departments and disciplines, especially with members of our Grassroots, Development, Legislative, Political, and Communications departments.
Specific responsibilities include:
- In consultation with key senior staff, lead the creation and implementation of an organizing strategy related to the grassroots education, mobilization and fundraising program; develop campaign plans and package campaigns with campaigners; ensure all campaign-related goals are met.
- Ensure the successful collaborative design of campaign pushes between departments to maximize our campaign output and motivate the grassroots team
- Directly manage, mentor and oversee long term development of the canvass and phones staff
- Participate in grassroots-related components of campaign planning
- Perform periodic strategic evaluations of the team's performance
- Ensure integration within the grassroots department and in the broader organization;
- Take a leadership role within organization to help shape the strategies and success of the grassroots team
- Recruit, hire and train both canvass and phones employees
- Oversee and manager the rebuilding of grassroots outreach program in key areas outside Los Angeles
- Ensure that the canvass and phones team has adequately trained staff
- Ensure the teams are in compliance with all HR policies; manage hiring and termination decisions with approval from the Chief of Staff
- Supervise team budgets
- Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/ SKILLS:
- BA/BS degree or similar amount of experience
- 3-5 years of organizing and/or campaign experience
- 1-2 years of management experience with a proven track record of coaching staff towards success
- Background of working with door-to-door or phones/street canvasses in grassroots advocacy or electoral campaigns
- Proven experience in training and coaching campaign volunteers including working with them remotely
- Experienced in planning strategic campaigns
- Experienced in a leadership role, creating a shared vision within a team and motivating staff
- Project management skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities, develop effective systems to track progress and analyze results, and set ambitious goals and deliver
- Patient, calm under pressure; able to thrive in a fast-paced campaign environment and to work under tight deadlines
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including editing; able to craft effective campaign messages for different audiences
- Honest communicator who can coach staff and deliver feedback; good listener who is willing to act on constructive feedback
- Passion for Equality California's mission
- Commitment to direct action and grassroots organizing as a means of affecting change
- Ability to travel as needed
