Position Description:

The Deputy Political Director will play an integral role in designing and managing national, state, and local electoral strategies for both the Center for Community Change and Center for Community Change Action.

The Deputy Political Director will work closely with the National Political Director and electoral team to advance our mission and core issue priorities including economic justice with a strong emphasis on reinvestment in black communities and immigrants' rights.

The Deputy Political Director will also support the management of a number of relationships with significant donors and funders of the Center's and CCCA's electoral work, and will coordinate with teams at the Center on fundraising strategies and work.

This position is a management position with significant program direction and supervisory responsibility, including the supervision of field staff.

Principal Responsibilities

  • In coordination with the National Political Director, advance the organization's mission and issue priorities (including economic justice and immigrants' rights) through a comprehensive strategy that links electoral organizing to grassroots base-building and issue work at both the grassroots and national levels.
  • Support the process to set overall goals and timelines for electoral field priorities.
  • Manage, supervise, develop and evaluate electoral program staff.
  • Provide the means for technical assistance to community-based organizations on a range of electoral capacities, including, but not limited to, list management, plan writing, goal setting, targeting, and building a field infrastructure.
  • Frequent travel throughout the country to work with local partner organizations, raise funds, meet with grassroots community, labor, non-profit and political leaders.
  • Represent the Center and the CCCA in speaking engagements, and prepare the National Political Director, President, Vice President, Managing Director and Chief of Staff to do so as well.
  • Work with other Center staff to build their understanding and use of electoral tools and strategies in the context of community organizing.
  • Track the national, state, and local landscape related to electoral organizing, including developments and best practices surfaced by other national organizing intermediaries and networks, national constituency organizations, election protection organizations, and allies in the labor, faith, and civil rights arena. Monitor demographic and political trends related to voting and civic participation.

Qualifications

  • Superior experience in electoral work including at least 5 years developing and managing implementation of electoral strategies for significant campaigns.
  • Strong background in and understanding of community organizing with a demonstrated ability to relate to grassroots community organizations and volunteer grassroots members and leaders.
  • Strong commitment and passion to building the political power of the poor, particularly people of color toward achieving a vision of social, economic and racial justice.
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with national, state and local organizational players engaged in electoral strategies and programs.
  • Strong understanding and experience with key electoral tools and technologies, including voter lists and data management.
  • Experience in managing staff and developing the skills and leadership of staff.
  • Significant experience in program planning and development, as well as fundraising and budget development and management.
  • Broad strategic vision that encompasses base-building, coalition-building, public policy, communications, electoral organizing, and collective action.
  • Strong team-building, facilitation, and coalition-building skills.
  • Excellent oral communication, public speaking, and writing skills.
  • Experience and comfort working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment.
  • Strong understanding of legal parameters for electoral organizing in both 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and PAC contexts preferred but not required.

This position reports to: National Political Director

Supervisory Responsibility: Electoral Field and Program Staff, and others as assigned

The Center for Community Change recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in the CCC bargaining unit and covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Travel Requirements: 25 – 30%

Salary and Benefits: CCC offers competitive salaries. CCC also offers an excellent benefits package, which includes 4 weeks of annual paid vacation; additional paid holiday leave between December 24 and January 1; 8% employer contribution to retirement account after six months of employment (and 3% employer contribution for the first 6 months); and a choice of generous health insurance plans.
