Who We Are
PushBlack, the nation's largest nonprofit media platform for Black people, builds deep, daily relationships with Black Americans through their mobile phones in order to transform Black civic engagement.
PushBlack attracts and engages subscribers through our innovative daily Black history and news service, which is based on text message and Facebook Messenger. With this daily relationship, PushBlack encourages our 1.4M subscribers to raise their voices and take action on critical issues, register to vote, and to cast their votes on Election Day.
Take a look at the PushBlack Manifesto to learn more about what we're doing.
What We're Looking For
A tech-savvy person who is passionate about the intersection of technology & content, and excited to tell the stories of Black America. Your time will be split between writing compelling content and building out mobile-messaging experiences for that content. In other words, this is a hybrid role - you are both a skilled writer but also a self starter who can learn new emerging technologies and get into the nitty-gritty of working in a metrics-driven media company that seeks to improve Black people's lives.
You'll engage with our 1.4M subscribers daily by utilizing various tech tools & platforms to push out content primarily via Facebook Messenger. We want someone who will become an expert in the PushBlack writing style, voice, and content delivery process. Being coachable is important to us; we'll train you and provide you with all the necessary tools to be successful in this role.
Our strategy is based on lean experimentation principles (e.g., lean startup, design thinking, etc.) so we use a data-driven, experiment-oriented approach to developing content. We try out ideas quickly, use data to determine what works for our audience, and iterate.
Since you're looking for a workplace that listens to its audience rather than "uses its gut" to make decisions you'll also appreciate that we move fast, making quick data-driven decisions.
What You'd Be Doing
Writing new, short form content and building mobile messaging ("bot") experiences -- sometimes on short notice, depending on what's happening in Black America.
Overseeing a series of A/B tests to optimize mobile messaging experiences. You'll run tests to identify the best ways to get our subscribers to engage with us on Messenger whether that's through new approaches to how we talk, better images, better sharing experiences, or something new you want to try out.
Gathering and analyzing marketing and audience engagement data to speed up our learning and subscriber growth. You'll figure out the most cost-effective ways to acquire (and retain) subscribers.
Publishing content on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Who You'd Be Working With
You'd work closely with our Creative Director and Chief Technology Officer. Remember, this is a hybrid role where you're working on a mix of content, marketing, and tech.
Got Skills?
Superb writing skills
High attention to detail
Experience with content management systems (e.g., Drupal)
Relevant experience in tech, digital and/or marketing industries.
This Would Put You Over The Top
Experience with Facebook Ads Manager and/or Facebook Messenger bots
Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Excel
Experience with reporting and analytics tools including Google Analytics and Facebook Analytics
Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop
What We Hope You're Looking For
You want to join a growing team that's hell-bent on transforming Black people's lives using the latest tech tools in partnership with grassroots groups.
You're tired of the same ol', same ol' and want to work on the cutting edge of tech, media, and Black liberation. You'll be a key member of a small team, and will learn the ins-and-outs of a startup.
You want to be a part of something new. We're a young organization, but have had massive breakthroughs. Listen to this...we grew from 50,000 to 1.4M daily subscribers in less than a year.
You'll learn a bunch. Some people look at us and think we're a tech company. Others think we're a media company. Truth is, we're a group of folks set on making wild, transformative social change for Black Americans - and we use every tool at our disposal to do so, ranging from digital publishing to coding to organizing to analytics & insights.
We're fun. Working on criminal justice reform, economic empowerment, and Black voter engagement is hard work so it's important that we look out for each other, send good memes, and argue over who invented the Moonwalk.
Where You'll Work
The couch, a coffee shop, your local coworking space--either way, our team is 100% remote.
