Position: Representation Intern

Las Vegas, Nevada

Posting Date: 2.5.2021

 

Position Type: Intern series - Part-Time/Temporary, Non-represented, 16-hours per week beginning February 15, 2021 - December 30, 2021.

Compensation: $15 per hour

Reports to: Department Manager and/or Designee

 

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Supervisory Duties: None

Interactions: Local union officers; Local union staff; SEIU Local 1107-represented workers.

Scope – Representation:

The Representation Intern supports SEIU Local 1107's Representation Department in its daily and long-term work related to contract enforcement. The Representation Department is responsible for monitoring worksite issues; managing and filing grievances; advancing issues to mediation and/or arbitration; interfacing with employers on behalf of members through labor-management committees; providing resources and support to worksite stewards, and the training/development of worksite stewards.

Example of Duties:

·       Triage member calls to either respond directly or connect to staff on issues related to collective bargaining agreements and requests for representation.

·       Prepare formal communications – via email or certified letters – to employers and union stewards

·       Assist representation staff with the facilitation of steward meetings (virtual and/or in-person), labor-management meetings, arbitration councils, in addition to joining union staff on worksite visits.

·       Phone bank, text bank current and potential members.

·       Manage/file documents as needed.

·       Assist in maintaining and tracking data related to grievances and worksite issues.

·       Conducting research on issues, when necessary.

·       Provide logistical support for meetings, events, rallies, hearings, and other public events.

·       Additional duties may be assigned.

CRITICAL ATTRIBUTES:

Skills and Abilities Beneficial for Assignment:

·       An understanding and/or interest to learn labor/employer relations principles and processes. Background in a legal office setting and/or familiarity with contracts, collective bargaining agreements a plus.

·       BA/BS and/or currently enrolled students in pre-law, political science, education, sociology, urban studies, public policy, or related field a plus.

·       Strong analytical and technical writing skills.

·       Detailed and deadline oriented.

·       Working knowledge of virtual meeting technology (Zoom, Google, Microsoft Teams, Webex).

·       Ability and understanding of Microsoft Office, G-Suite or similar.

·       Ability to learn and work within the union's content management system.

·       Strong written and verbal communication skills.

·       Ability to establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.

·       Sound organizational skills to manage and prioritize work subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment, as an individual and as a member of a team.

·       A commitment and passion for social justice and advancing the rights of working people in Nevada.

COVID-19 Protocols: Given SEIU Local 1107's current COVID safety protocols, this position will work both remotely and in office, as assigned. Assignments may change as SEIU Local 1107 revisits protocols.
