[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] Chicago Fair Workweek Coalition Seeks Campaign Director

About the Chicago Fair Workweek Coalition: The Chicago Fair Workweek Coalition is a policy and advocacy group with more than 20 organizations who represent hundreds of thousands of workers and activists across Chicago and Illinois. We came together to support Chicago's first fair workweek ordinance that seeks to reform unfair and unpredictable scheduling practices that affect hundreds of thousands of workers in Chicago. Recently we've also introduced a companion bill in Springfield that deals with reporting pay. Workers struggle to meet their responsibilities at home and on the job, harming their ability to make ends meet and the overall strength of our economy. When Chicago workers don't know what their schedule will be in advance, or how many hours they can rely on to meet their household budget, it's difficult to manage basic expenses, arrange child car, continue their education, or get a second job or pursue job training.

We seek to build support and get the Chicago City Council and Mayor to pass and sign into law the Chicago Fair Workweek Ordinance, which was introduced in June of 2017, and would provide Chicago workers with the predictability and financial stability they need, and will create more stable and productive workplaces.  We also seek to do the same in Springfield with legislators and the governor regarding our reporting pay bill.

Job Description: The Campaign Director is responsible for developing our strategy, approach and local message to win our campaign in Chicago and Springfield. The Director will help manage the Fair Workweek Coalition's efforts to organize workers to meet with individual Aldermen, Legislators, Mayoral staff, and testify publicly in support of the coalition. The Director will also meet with local decision-makers and opinion leaders and represent our organization to allies and the media. The Campaign Director will help build and foster our membership, grassroots and online base of support. Finally, the Campaign Director will help recruit activists, workers, and volunteers to join us, organize in targeted Wards and districts, and maintain good systems for tracking and building on our work.

Locations: Chicago, Illinois and occasionally Springfield, Illinois

Responsibilities:

  • Program: Run our City program which will focus on engaging elected officials, organizing advocates and workers, policy development, research and messaging.
  • Advocacy: Bring problems and solutions to the attention of decision-makers—including Chicago Aldermen, state legislators, the Mayor's staff, and local union and worker advocacy leaders. Develop appropriate messages and materials for making the case to decision-makers. Build relationships with key players in the City and state.
  • Campaign strategy: Enact the agreed upon Coalition Campaign Plan. Assess opportunities for building political support for our agenda through coalition-building, grassroots organizing, media coverage, endorsements and message development.
  • Media outreach: Coordinate our public interest campaigns through media events, press releases, editorial board meetings and other outreach with a goal of building name recognition for the Coalition, educating the public about our issues, and building and demonstrating support for our ordinance and state law.
  • Coalition building: Identify, reach out and work with partners who can help us win our campaigns.
  • Staff recruitment and development: Recruit new staff and volunteers to increase our impact and build our power.

Qualifications: Candidates must have at least 3-5 years of relevant professional experience. Qualified candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to worker advocacy and public interest issues and to citizen-based social change, as well as a track record of leadership. We're looking for goal-driven and results-oriented individuals who have excellent verbal, writing and analytical skills, the ability to speak persuasively in a charged atmosphere, and enthusiasm for the work. The ideal candidate will have experience in city and state-level political advocacy and organizing, a proven ability to recruit, train and develop volunteers, the ability to work in a self-directed environment, and demonstrated success in building relationships with the full spectrum of worker advocacy organizations and political stakeholders.

Ideally, the candidate can speak conversational Spanish and has worked with organized labor, worker centers, and local elected officials in the past.

The Chicago Fair Workweek Coalition places a priority on recruiting diverse candidates in racial, socioeconomic, gender, sexual orientation, and immigration status.

Compensation & Benefits: Target annual compensation for this position is commensurate with the relevant professional experience and/or advanced degrees that a candidate has. Healthcare and travel stipends can be provided.
